Antalya

The capital of the Turkish Riviera – the old town of Kaleiçi, ancient sites and a turquoise sea beneath the Taurus Mountains.

Antalya sits on the Mediterranean coast, between the sea and the peaks of the Taurus Mountains. It is known for its long beaches and mild climate, but also for the remarkable wealth of ancient cities in its surroundings.

What to see

  • Kaleiçi – the old town, with narrow lanes, Ottoman houses and the old harbour.
  • Hadrian’s Gate – a Roman triumphal arch built in honour of Emperor Hadrian.
  • Düden Waterfalls – the lower falls plunge straight into the sea.
  • Aspendos and Perge – one of the best-preserved Roman theatres and a sprawling ancient city.

When to go

The swimming season runs from May to October. For exploring the ancient sites, spring and autumn are the most comfortable, when the heat eases and the sea is still warm.
